Tornado Relief Efforts: A Community United in Support
In the aftermath of the recent tornado in August 2020, our community came together with remarkable compassion and collaboration to support those affected. Eastern Virginia CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) was able to conduct critical disaster and needs assessments, helping guide recovery efforts where they were most needed.
A strong partner in this effort was ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services). Their consistent presence alongside CERT volunteers in the field makes our county truly unique. Together, they enhance communication and coordination during emergency responses, strengthening the backbone of our local disaster readiness.
White Stone Methodist Church and St. Andrews Presbyterian Church partnered with Eastern VA CERT to provide comforting BBQ and chicken meals for residents, volunteers, and emergency responders. Their hospitality brought not only nourishment but also a much-needed sense of community and care.
Lions Club International, in coordination with the Lancaster Lions, provided essential financial support. Gift certificates for clothing, medications, and food were distributed to families in need — a vital step toward helping them regain stability and independence.
White Stone Methodist Church and the Kilmarnock Volunteer Rescue Squad also supported a displaced family of four by arranging temporary hotel accommodations, offering immediate shelter and relief.
These collective efforts are a powerful reminder that it truly takes a village to respond in times of crisis. We extend heartfelt thanks to all the organizations, emergency services, volunteers, and partners who stepped up with empathy and action to serve our neighbors in need.
Damage Assessment
CERT damage assessment is a critical component in the aftermath of a disaster. The primary purpose of these assessments is to accurately determine the level of destruction within a community. This information is essential for first responders, as it aids in prioritizing response efforts based on the severity of damage and the needs of affected individuals and families.
During the assessment process, CERT volunteers are trained to evaluate both structural and non-structural damages. They systematically document the condition of buildings, infrastructure, and public services, while also noting any hazardous materials that may pose risks to safety. This thorough approach enables local agencies to understand what resources are required and where they are needed most urgently.
Moreover, the insights gained from damage assessments inform the allocation of funds and resources for recovery efforts. By identifying areas with the greatest need, CERT plays a pivotal role in ensuring that aid is provided effectively and efficiently, facilitating quicker recovery for the community as a whole.
Training
CERT Training: Every month, CERT conducts an in-person training class. These sessions are designed to equip participants with essential skills in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. Each class covers a range of topics, including basic first aid, disaster response techniques, and community resilience strategies. Attendance is encouraged for anyone interested in learning how to effectively assist during emergencies, fostering a safer community for all.
Participants can expect hands-on experience and interaction with trained instructors, ensuring they gain practical knowledge applicable in real-life scenarios. Whether you are a beginner or have prior experience, these classes cater to all levels of expertise. Join us in strengthening our community's preparedness and response capabilities.
Disaster/Terror Response
CERT play a vital role in enhancing safety and resilience during disasters and incidents of terrorism. By engaging local citizens through preparation, training, and organization, these programs ensure that communities are equipped to respond effectively when professional responders may be overwhelmed or delayed.
CERT training includes basic disaster response skills such as first aid, search and rescue, fire safety, and team organization. This foundational knowledge enables citizens to take immediate action in crises, providing critical support not only to their families but also to their neighbors and the broader community.
Most importantly, CERT programs foster a sense of collective responsibility and community engagement. By promoting collaboration among residents, these teams can help to create a culture of preparedness, ensuring that individuals know their roles and responsibilities during emergencies.
